New slips. |
Thanks so much to all who weighed in last week on my LIVING ROOM STYLING ISSUES living room. I really appreciated all (but one)(I think it was a joke) of the comments and opinions. What I learned was, although I had pieces I loved in here, some didn't work work because they were too dark and they sucked the life out of the room, or the scale was off.
I also know that I can't have anything yellow or beige with yellow undertones. I had 2 William Birch style chairs covered in a taupe cotton velvet. Although I loved the fabric and have used it many times for clients, it was dull and lifeless in here. So my thoughts turned to slipcovers. A basic slip was quoted at $250 for labor and 7 yards of fabric so @ 20 per yard, that was around $390 per chair...times two = $780.00. Not in the budget. So I Google'd slip covers and found Ballard Designs had a very similar chair, exact measurements, sold the slips separately and shipped to Canada. Price $118.00 each.
Last week I followed Mark's advice. He has been de-cluttering for a year and hopes to rid his house of 365 items. I sold 2 brand new dresses to my friend (labels on, in a size I thought I could squeeze into), a dresser on Craigslist and then took several bags of clothes and shoes to a new shop that buys FOR CASH them on the spot. Anything they wouldn't take went to the Salvation Army. In total I made a little over $200.00. Almost enough to cover the slipcovers. The slips arrived yesterday and fit really well. Which was a real Fluke.
What I discovered here in my room is, it is important to balance not only the scale and weight of the left to the right side, but to balance the light. The slipcovers made all the difference. On the right side my felt pillow adds a subtle hint of colour.
It feels much brighter in there now...works well with the white table and my sofa. The carpet needs to be bigger (keep tripping on the edge) but I am hoping to find something old at a market that is a bit faded. the Hannah cat approves and enjoys the hand knitted blanket found at a thrift shop.
Great Job! The only thing I would probably change is the candle sticks on the mantle...remember the rule of '3' and not having complete symetry. I find it difficult myself to not split or center everything.:-)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to check Ballard's for slips for my sofa! Thanks for the tip!

I love the way it looks and the pops of color are fab!
ReplyDeleteIt's just beautiful! I love that everything isn't pure white, there are little pops of reds and black. Wonderful job!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I love everything.
ReplyDeleteWhite slipcovers are always a good look. Your living room is great! xx
ReplyDeleteLooks beautiful Chania. I especially love the pops of color. I normally am not a fan of anything even remotely orange, but I LOVE that lampshade and with the throw...looks perfect. I knew you would figure it out. You have wonderful taste.
ReplyDeleteI think you nailed it this time Chania!
ReplyDeleteNow what's the name of that store that buys for cash on the spot? Daughter is looking for somewhere to take some v. good stuff.
What would we do without white slip covers? I love mine. You have a beautiful room and what a sweet kitty kat!
ReplyDeleteI have white slip covers from Ikea and love them! Your room looks great--love the ruffled pillows!
ReplyDeleteLove the calm look those slip-covers give your living room. The little bits of colour in your rug and cushions and blanket really stand out as well. It looks great.
ReplyDeleteLove it..would have them in our living room if we could...hope your keeping well!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great look, Chania. You can have the balance and lightness and still enjoy the pops of colour. What a deal on the slips too.
ReplyDeleteWonderful results...those slips are amazing!

Gosh I've liked every living room you've showed me. Good luck.
ReplyDeletefluke? more like a miracle that they fit. you are so lucky! the room looks amazing and it is so good to know that a pro like yourself can have difficulty in their own space. i love that orange lamp in the corner too. perfect.
ReplyDeleteWow What a difference. You definitely did the right thing. I could just sink into those chairs right now with a cup of tea and a good book! Well done. Sarah x
ReplyDeleteThanks for the e-mail Chania...as soon as we can get daughter's closet sorted, we will be on the hunt!
ReplyDeleteIt looks lovely! Great job.
ReplyDeleteI just love that you sold unused things to purchase the slipcovers that you actually did need. Good for you!
ReplyDeleteI really am glad that people, around me, have started their own decluttering. Don't you agree that it's a great feeling to be free of so much stuff?
Thanks for the Shout-Out!
Your Friend, m.
What a great way to find the money to buy your new slipcovers. Your room is beautiful. You are full information, thank you.
ReplyDeleteLooks good, Chania :-) Once the makeover ball gets rolling, it definitely has a domino effect - now you've not only redecorating your living room, but you've emptied out some of your closet too!
ReplyDeleteIt looks gorgeous and what a score with the slipcovers! Love that you almost sold enough to pay for them - always a bonus. I have the same darkness problem with my 2 brown leather club chairs we shipped here. While they look ok with the linen sofa, the space isn't large and they just feel like they're sucking the lightness out of the room too. My plan is to sew up some covers as soon as I can kick my guy out of my "studio" room and into his own office (I can't even see the desk right now. sigh)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great...very eclectic, yet cozy. Good for you for getting rid of stuff in order to get something new. That's what I need to do.
ReplyDeleteLove the finished look...those slipcovers are fantastic...my couch could use some right about now!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful living room and a cute cat!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Yvonne
I hate my sofa so much ... I can't quite throw it out as it is so new but it was such a mistake.
ReplyDeleteI think new down filled cushions and white slipcovers might save it.
If the cat likes it, I know I will :)
If I were messing about with your mantle, I would just have the flowers up there ..with the painting.
Wow - I LOVE it that you were able to find those slips for such a great price and they look custom! Yea for you!

The ships are awesome, and a great price.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, though . . . a joke? Doesn't sound like a joke to me. Very inappropriate. Sorry . . . I'm just sayin' . . .
