Why You Can't Buy Wine at the Corner Grocery Store in Ontario

First of all, that's an odd name for wine don't you think?  Secondly, in the Province of Ontario you can only buy wine and liquor at the LCBO (Liquor Licensing Board of Ontario).  You can't pop by the corner store like you can in other Provinces like Quebec, and pick up a bottle.  Nope, in Ontario we need the LCBO to police inappropriate labels that could indicate it's OK to drink and fly a plane (it never is).  Our LCBO has done a fine job of protecting our eyes from unscrupulous vintners who shamefully label their bottles with naughtiness. Of course.....one just can't help but peel off that little red sticker to see what's lurking underneath.

  1. Don't you just love the way our government loves to protect us Chania! And I think the LCBO is more about dictating taxes than protecting our delicate sensibilities.

  2. Recently read a great article about the new and racy names on labels ... they do tend to draw the eye in. Happy Holidays up there where you live!

  3. With all the things on television, they're worried about a someone seeing a glass of wine?! Around here, there are certain cities that don't allow the sale of alcohol.

  4. Oh my, that's racy!
Remember the marmelaide you made last year? I found the canned oranges here. Finally!

  5. That's one thing I don't miss from ONtario. BC doesn't have corner store liquor but at least we have private stores that set their own hours. No more being stuck without wine on a holiday or late on a Sat night.

  7. I'll drink to that!
Honestly, I love that bottle. And if I were to ever fly a bomber, I would have a glass of Merlot handy too.

  8. Along the vein of wine bottles, but on another note, I was reading in Time magazine that many wine bottles have BPO, the chemical, in them. Amazing what manufacturers of most anything can get by with these days. In cans of food also.

  9. They sell wine everywhere here .. I think.
But on election days, no liquor is sold .. anywhere.
The wine / booze sections in markets are closed off, everything is covered, you can't even see the bottles.
They take voting seriously here, you do it sober or else :)

  11. One of my favourite things about living in Canberra is the ability to buy a good bottle of wine at the local shops...not sure what that says about me!

  13. Not only can you not buy wine in corner grocery stores in Dubai, you need to apply for a license to purchase it and provide them with a letter of approval from your employer!!

  14. Chania, I well remember going into those government run liquor stores in Toronto with my dad. He would load up a case of wine and a bunch of beer if my brothers were going to be home. We also would return those beer bottles for credit. My dad must have been in hog heaven when we moved to Florida and he could just pop out whenever and pick up a bottle of his favorite wine.

We have a fantastic store here called Total Wine. They have all kinds of unique wines, beers and liquor from all over the world. I love the crazy labels on some, just like the one you have pictured. How funny that they felt the need to cover the glass of wine on a wine bottle. Ann
