I was grocery shopping this evening and my check out clerk was a young man, a bit awkward and a bit ill at ease with himself. He had a ring of eczema around his mouth and was shy and blushed when I spoke to him. He struck me (and I may be very wrong in my judgement) as the type of boy who would have difficulty with social situations and making friends, perhaps teased a bit and labelled a nerd or geek. Having been a real geek myself, and teased in school, I have a soft spot for those that don't fit in. I could be way off in my assessment of him, and hoped I was. But, I was more aware of him than I would have been last Friday morning. He caught my attention in a good way. He had a sweet smile and nice manners.
He made me think of those young people who are ostracized, loners, misfits, depressed or struggling with mental and social issues. I asked him if he was affected by the current teachers strike, and then we struck up a conversation about his college and his studies of Pop Culture, and how he loved the debate about education going on right now and followed it keenly. He had such worthwhile opinions and ideas about the schools system. Once he got talking he was on a roll, actually holding up the line for a minute. He bade me a jolly and zealous Merry Christmas and smiled a big cheerful grin at me. It almost made me cry. There's something good and interesting in everyone regardless of social skills and appearance. He made me happy and sad at the same time.
On the home front a lovely weekend was had by all. Although I didn't get to feel the baby move, Girl Child felt her little future niece or nephew kicking and got that thrill you get when you first feel a baby moving in a mums tummy. We were able to get Sweet Mama out of the nursing home twice. Once to a garden center that was beautifully done up for Christmas. She helped me carry this large reindeer on her lap as we browsed the aisles. She was giggling all the way. She also came for our early Christmas dinner with the Raz Kids and Auntie.
My sweet little feral cat Hannah seems to be not well. She lost a bit of weight after she had an incident with a Foster Dog I took in, but seemed to get over that and was eating well again. Boy Child noticed she had lost a lot of weight and when I weighed her today she is down 2 whole pounds. So now I am worried. Vet tomorrow at 3 pm. Please be nothing serious!
Back to the spy cam.....this white suited man in my Florida kitchen is a Mold mitigation Expert. Seems we had a leak under the dishwasher that has destroyed our lower cabinets and they have all been removed. Back splash torn out, counters removed and now cracked.
The mold elimination is done, air quality tests expected tomorrow and cabinet rebuild starting after Christmas. We had Blue Eyes granite, a hard to obtain and pricey granite (came with the house) that is now cracked so we get to pick something else. I am thinking of Carrara Marble instead. But I really need your opinion. Here's the kitchen as it is.
and here's a pic of a house with Carerra and dark cabinets

What do you think????
and because we all need a chuckle right now here's your morning funny
(please don't take offense to the swearing)
A SHORT LOVE STORY
>
> A man and a woman who had never met before,
> but who were both married to other people,
> found themselves assigned to the same sleeping room
> on a Trans-continental train.
>
> Though initially embarrassed and uneasy over sharing a room,
> They were both very tired and fell asleep quickly,
> he in the upper berth and she in the lower.
>
> At 1:00 AM, the man leaned down and gently woke the woman saying, ...
> 'Ma'am, I'm sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to reach into the closet
> to get me a second blanket ? I'm awfully cold.'
>
> 'I have a better idea,' she replied
> 'Just for tonight, let's pretend that we're married.
>
> 'Wow! ... That's a great idea!', he exclaimed.
>
> 'Good,' she replied. ... 'Get your own f*cking blanket.'
>
> After a moment of silence, ... he farted.

ReplyDeletePLEASE PLEASE get the Carerra!!! My all time favorite. ( absolutely gorgeous kitchen by the way )
ReplyDeleteLove this post Chania - and your compassion towards this young man who is trying to find out where he fits.............
And mostly I love you for making me laugh out loud when laughter is hard to find this week.
Much love,
Suzan
lovely post. so full of compassion and humor and somehow even decorating!
ReplyDeletei say get the carrera chania. one of my favorite combos is black or dark cabinets with the white carerra marble. i think it'll look fab.
xo
Your mother is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI did indeed chuckle right out loud. A very merry Christmas to your sweet mama <3
ReplyDeleteSweet mama looks adorable in the photo!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely go with the marble!!! I'm weird, I've never liked granite...I love the look of either concrete countertops or marble:)
Love your new choice of marble, however I am partial to blues ... brighter choice with the dark cabinets.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully written.
ReplyDeleteThe marble is sooooooo pretty; go for it.

Sweet Mama..so good to see her! This world needs more good people like you...thank you for taking a minite from your hectic day to extend kindness to someone who doesn't quite fit the mold! Speaking of mold.....of a different sort...oh my, what a hassle in that pretty kitchen. I say go with the lighter marble.
ReplyDeleteOh I do like marble. I have black granite in my kitchen with stainless steel appliances and sink and cherry cabinets. It is a bit dark although I have tons of lights it is still one of those sophisticated but not that "homey" kind of kitchens. Perfect for a 100 year old French style building in Argentina but I would go for lighter everything in the next house ... in the US :)
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention Mama. So now I know where you got your sweetness :)
ReplyDeletekisses to her .. and to you.
Wonderful post Chania, it takes just a few words to make someone's day, good on you... Wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas and especially your sweet mum. Hope Hannah is OK! Love the reindeer also.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Ivan
I'm laughing out loud at that joke. Your mama is sweet, I hope your kitty's okay and marble all the way!
ReplyDeleteThe carrera looks great. (I have light cabinets and dark (black) quartz which I LOVE. Great for baking - easy cleanup, no staining, durable.
ReplyDeleteI guess it depends on how you use the surface what will work.
Too many judge other people on looks alone. I'm so glad you saw the truth in that young man at the checkout. Love the picture of your mother with the reindeer. Have a lovely special Christmas xx
ReplyDeleteI truly love that picture of your sweet mom. It reminds me of my own mother - wish she was here still. I hope the kitty is okay. Our little nervous nellie has put ON about 2 pounds for reasons I cannot fathom. California seems to agree with her jittery nature.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all you said about the young man at the check out stand. It was the perfect illustration of how we all need to reach out and discover that someone who may seem "different" is actually very interesting and that we are more alike than we realize. It's been on my mind constantly since last week and as we learn more and more.
Sorry you didn't feel the baby kick, but at least your daughter is a witness (and now has one up on you). Ann
Chania...your point regarding those of us who may struggle in social situations...or people who are affected with disabilities, mental illness....or a wide range of other issues....is so important. Perhaps when we quit treating others as different (as you did with the sweet young check out)...perhaps there will be less violence in our world. Thank you for reminding us of this....prayers for your kitty.... Happy Holidays! (Carrera, I vote YES!)
ReplyDeleteHa!! Perfect. I need that!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, Carrera all the way.
I love your Mama. I love that you take care of her. I am thankful that she has a good, loving , kind daughter who is a reflection of her. So many older people are treated like throw-aways, and I am glad to know she is not one of them. She looks so cute with that deer on her lap, socks/sandals and all.
