Inexpensive (Faux) Grain Sack Table Runner

Happy Easter to everyone.  By now you are likely relaxing and fed well on turkey, ham, lamb or whatever ever else you enjoy for your Easter lunch/dinner.

A little while ago, I got this new dining table that extends to a whopping 12 feet. Which makes it hard to find a cloth or runner that actually fits it. While pondering in the fabric shop last week, I came across this material intended for tea towels. Sold by the meter, it has two edges already hemmed, which makes it ideal to use as a table runner. I bought a 4 meter piece and frayed the edges because I am really lazy about sewing.

I think it looks a lot like the vintage grain sack fabric that is so popular at the moment.  It also comes in blue and green.  I got 4 meters for $17.00 as it was 40% off.

I had a small crowd for dinner today.  Each person got a chocolate dipped marshmallow (see my previous post) and a clay tag with an Easter chick on it.  If you want to see how to make these tags the Beach Cottage blog has a tutorial.  You can see it HERE but you have to pay for it, or HERE on McCarthy Designs Blog.  Or you can buy them from Ness Lockyer who makes the best ones I have seen.  Check out Ness's Etsy shop Marley and Lockyer.

  8. WHICH FABRIC SHOP?! I used to buy narrow-loom linen fabric at Poppy's in Oakland before they closed, so I have been bereft for years...

I love your use of the fabric - your table looks like a true refectory table, long and narrow (32"? 30"?) I'd make you a tablecloth...

  11. A very pretty room! I love the mix of elegant (chandy, glassware, those lovely tall windows) with the rustic (woods, runner etc.) Looks great. I picked up some of the same tea toweling. Happy Easter.

  13. My table is 30"W and goest o 12 feet long.

I purchased this at Fabricland. (in Canada) It was hidden away under the cutting bench along with all the linings. I asked what it was celled and they said Tea toweling. It lovely and thick, but I do imagine it will shrink a lot. I bought it extra long.

  14. Chania, I love your new table runner. What a brilliant idea. I've seen that stuff, although not in such a nice pattern. I may have to go and get myself some. Is it on sale right now?

  15. Well, I'm stealing that idea! It looks great and I won't have to finish the sides just the ends - wonderful, thanks, J

  16. Your dining room is beautiful! I just made a similar runner out of the towel fabric. I am a non-sewer so I used iron on tape for the hem. Yours looks wonderful.

  19. What a fabulous and easy idea for a runner. Your table display looks so pretty, as usual. I always think how fun it would be to be a guest at one of your gatherings because you always decorate so simply but festively. I love those clay tags. Each time you feature them, I keep meaning to make a batch of my own. I'll have to do so soon to get it out of my system!
