Crown Jars

We 7 for 7 with sunny days here in Florida.....a wonderful treat for us Canadians in January.  All through this house, lights streams in and highlights the everyday.  I am an avid collector of of old jars, especially the turquoise ones. We were gearing up for Gin and Tonic cocktails and then noticed how pretty the lemons were next to the turquoise glass and the yellow mixer.

Although I have a few Ball and other jars, my favorites are the Canadian Crown Jars. These jars were made from 1880 to 1965.  I have several from the early 1900's.  You can tell by the pontil (round knob of glass on the bottom) the shape of the top and lid, and also by the actual crown on the front.  Over the years Crown changed the motif which makes them very interesting to collect.

I line them up on the kitchen window where they serve no purpose other than looking pretty.

You can see the one on the left is marked 1958.  The second one cost me about $30.00 as it is the oldest.

A close up of the crowns....

  1. Gorgeous! I love those old jars too. I'm jealous of your nice weather, it's freezing here.

  2. Beautiful! I love the blue colour. I have an old Blue Ribbon Coffee jar in my fridge. It has been in my fridge since my Grandmother gave it to me when I first got married over 30 years ago. It used to hold my shredded Romano cheese but now it sits in the same spot empty - I can't bring myself to move it. It's an homage to my grandmother.

  4. They are lovely Chania...and the blue against the yellow is perfect. Not what you would call warm here, but nice enought on the weekend for a bike ride and we have wonderful big blue skies.

  9. I've never been able to find the ones with crowns. With the popularity of crowns they will get more expensive I imagine.
    Yours are wonderful.

  10. I didn't know that about Crown mason jars - I'll have to go and have a look at the crown's on mine. I've only recently started collecting vintage mason jars so don't know much about their history.

I enjoyed your Florida post - looks very relaxing.

  12. That's a beautiful ensemble. I love your happy Kitchenaid and I'm thinking that in another few weeks when the daffodils are out a few here and there in the jars would look delightful.

  13. Love your jars! The aqua ones aren't easy to come by - I found 3 Ball jars in Muskoka a couple of years ago and they were from the US, I guess the ones in Canada are clear. Love your Crown jars best :)

  18. I love my crown jars! I have never seen one with the crown shape you have. Two days ago I found and Atlas jar with the most interesting shaped neck. It is also aqua. Do you know any history of the Atlas jar.
