Weekend Plans

Mystery cake..likely going to be chocolate served on my pretty Tiffany Blue cake plate.
We had a short week this week here in Canada due to the Family Day Holiday. They are calling for snow, but since we've only had a handful of snow this year, I'm not buying it. It's raining right now so let's hope the temperature doesn't plunge.  This weekend will be a fairly quiet one. I am going away next Wednesday so I will be busy getting my suitcase ready and work completed so no one notices I'm gone. Foster dog if not adopted by then will be spending his days at the Raz Man's office. He's been a few times and left his calling card both times.

One of my man gifts complete with homemade wrapping and Celtic cross clay tag.

For the most part, I keep track of birthdays and always throw a party, buy a decent gift, and bake a huge cake, but this year for my eldest brother, I basically skipped it. It was 10 days ago, and other than a "hey happy birthday" call, I did zippo...zero..nothing. So guilt crept up and I am hosting a family dinner in his honor on Sunday.

Masculine dining table....this was his last years supper.

I think I may barbecue something, that is if we don't get the foot of snow predicted. Other than that, all I know is the cake will be chocolate. Last year I bought him a candle.  A really good one, in a nice tin with a manly aroma of cigars and leather and bacon. The rest of the family thought it was a ridiculous gift for a man. Which sparked a discussion on whether men like to be given candles. Bro had to admit it was a great gift since he was sitting at my dinner table. He's a hip dude. He cooks, has a nice apartment with lots of art and bits from his travels.  I thought it was a good gift. I guess I should ask the male readers what they think. Tom, John, Mark.....is a candle a decent gift for a fella?

Birthday cake clay tags I made.

  1. First of all, isn't guilt a great thing? ;) Your brother will love his dinner party, I'm sure. Love your tags! I'm curious too, about whether or not guys are into candles. Will have to check back!

  3. Hmmm...I can only comment on my experience as a gift-giver. I would have to say that several men I know would not want a candle but then I also have a couple that would. Personally, the ones that would are sort of hip too. They have a little design going on in their personal spaces and seem to like their nests. Perhaps that is part of it.

  4. My son gave my brother a candle for Christmas once - there was some stunned silence from both sides. We still talk about it.... Your brother sounds like he would like that candle tho. Love that cake plate. Ann

  5. Joe would not like a candle but for the practical reason that we do not use them at the old house because it is terribly old and could set the house afire. It has eight fire places but we do not use them ever. I think a bacon and cigar scented candle sounds very interesting and manly.

  7. I'm sure the dinner party will be the best gift you could give. Love your clay tags Chania. They're fabulous. And I'm also interested to know what the guys think about the candle idea. I know my brother would look at me twice, but then he is always impossible to buy for so any present is worrisome. xx

  10. Actually my husband got a candle given to him when he retired. It wasn't a nice manly one either. He didn't mind.
We don't get that holiday here. Probably the only province in Canada.
